Templehof to remain open until BBI is open in 2010/11

The Berlin Airport Authority has accepted the ruling handed down by the top Berlin administrative court on 23rd September 2004 as part of a legal protection temporary injunction.

Tempelhof Airport will not now close on 31st October 2004 as the authority had wished in order to immediately reduce the losses caused there.

“So flight operations will continue uninterrupted,” said Dieter Johannsen-Roth, the Berlin Airports’ Chief Executive Officer. “This means that the consensus decision, which was signed in 1996 by the three partners concerning the expansion of Schönefeld Airport to form BBI, continues to hold good for the airport authority.”

In line with this, the decision published by the Berlin Aviation Authority envisages the cancellation of approval for operations at Tempelhof once final official authorisation has been given for BBI. “This decision continues to form the basis for handling operations at Tempelhof Airport for us,” Mr Johannsen-Roth went on.

The airport authority does not believe that Tempelhof Airport will be kept open beyond this, say, till 2010.
